by Yucheng Zhang

This lecture starts with environmental narratives, ranging from (1) wilderness, (2) urban environmental agenda like parks, and (3) environmental justice.

History of Environmental Justice Movement

The Environmental Justice Movement began in 1982 in a samll, low-income, predominately African-American community in Warren County, North Carolina, in respond to a landfill project of PCB. in 1983, U.S. General Accounting Office found that the location of hazardous waste landfills are disproportionately related to black communities.
In 1987, UCC Commission for Racial Justice publishes Toxic Waste and Race Report, and found race as a more influential factor compared to geography of hazardous waste disposal facilities. In 1991, redefined the environment as “where people live, work, and play”.
